Travel Advisory

Health and Vaccination Requirements

Visitors must present a valid yellow fever vaccination certificate upon entry into Uganda. Malaria is present in many regions, so travelers are advised to take preventive medication, use mosquito repellent, and sleep under insect-treated nets where necessary.

Safety and Security

Tourists should exercise normal travel precautions, especially in crowded areas and urban centers. It is advisable to travel with licensed tour operators when visiting national parks or remote areas. Avoid traveling at night in unfamiliar regions and keep valuables secure.

Transportation and Travel Advice

The main international entry point is Entebbe International Airport, located near Lake Victoria. Visitors should arrange airport transfers in advance and use reliable transportation services such as licensed taxis or tour company vehicles.

Cultural and Local Etiquette

Uganda has diverse cultures and traditions. Visitors should dress modestly in rural communities and respect local customs and traditions. Photography of government buildings and military installations is usually restricted.

Insurance and Documentation

Travel insurance covering medical emergencies and adventure activities such as gorilla trekking or mountain climbing is highly recommended. Travelers should also carry copies of important documents such as passports and visas.

Essential FAQ

Yes. Gorilla trekking is highly regulated by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA). Treks are led by armed rangers and professional guides to ensure the safety of both the humans and the gorillas.
The best time is during the Dry Seasons (June to August and December to February). These months are ideal for trekking as the forest trails are less slippery and wildlife is easier to spot.
Long-sleeved shirts and trousers are essential for forest treks to protect against "sweat bees" and thorns. Sturdy hiking boots and a waterproof jacket are non-negotiable for the rainforest.
The Nile officially begins its journey to the Mediterranean from Jinja, Uganda, at the northern end of Lake Victoria. It is a world-class destination for white-water rafting.
As of 2026, a gorilla trekking permit for foreign non-residents is $800 USD. It is recommended to book these months in advance as they sell out quickly.
