The Destination

The Spirit of the Wild

Timbavati Private Nature Reserve is one of South Africa's most celebrated wildlife destinations, nestled in the Greater Kruger ecosystem in Limpopo Province. Unlike the national park, Timbavati operates as a private, unfenced reserve where exclusive safari lodges host limited guests, ensuring an intimate and unhurried bush experience. The reserve gained worldwide fame for its remarkable white lions, a genetic rarity born of a recessive gene in the local lion population. Guests can explore vast mixed bushveld habitats on open 4x4 game drives guided by expert rangers and Shangaan trackers, as well as on guided bush walks. Home to Africa's Big Five — lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino — alongside wild dog, cheetah, hyena, and hundreds of bird species, Timbavati delivers world-class game viewing throughout the year. The absence of fences between Timbavati and Kruger means wildlife moves freely, and the uncrowded nature of the reserve allows for exclusive sightings, off-road driving, and the freedom to follow animals wherever they lead.

Essential FAQ

Timbavati is a private, unfenced reserve sharing a boundary with Kruger. It offers exclusive, off-road game drives with few guests, luxury lodges, and guided bush walks — experiences not available inside the national park. The absence of fencing means wildlife moves freely between the two areas.
White lions are present in Timbavati but sightings cannot be guaranteed as they are wild animals. Some lodges within the reserve have a higher frequency of white lion sightings. Our team can advise which lodge offers the best current chance of an encounter.
Yes, Timbavati falls within a malaria-risk zone. We strongly recommend consulting a travel health doctor before your trip to discuss appropriate prophylaxis medication. Lodges take precautions to minimise mosquito exposure.
Most lodges require children to be at least 6 years old to join open vehicle game drives. Some lodges have family suites and offer tailored junior ranger programmes. Please advise us of your children's ages when booking so we can match you to the most suitable lodge.
Fly into Johannesburg O.R. Tambo International Airport, then take a connecting flight to Hoedspruit (HDS) Airport — approximately 1 hour. Your lodge will arrange a road transfer of roughly 45 minutes. Alternatively, a direct road transfer from Johannesburg takes about 5–6 hours.
