The Destination

The Spirit of the Wild

Thanda Island is Tanzania's premier private island destination, situated in the warm turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean off the coast of Kilwa in southern Tanzania. Covering approximately 20 hectares of pristine coral-fringed land, the island is available exclusively for private hire, meaning guests have the entire island — its beach, coral reef, dive sites, staff, and luxury villa — entirely to themselves.

The island takes its name from the Swahili word for "love," and it is easy to understand why. Surrounded by some of the most biodiverse coral reef ecosystems in the East African Indian Ocean, Thanda Island sits within a protected marine area teeming with whale sharks, dolphins, turtles, manta rays, and extraordinary reef fish. Above water, the island's powdery white beach, swaying palms, and crystalline lagoon create a scene of effortless tropical perfection.

Thanda Island's villa — designed with natural materials and open-plan spaces that blur the boundary between interior and ocean — accommodates up to 10 guests across five beautifully appointed suites. A dedicated team of over 30 staff, including a private chef, marine biologist, dive instructor, and butler service, ensures every aspect of the stay is flawlessly tailored to guests' wishes.

Beyond the beach, Thanda Island offers some of the finest diving and snorkelling in East Africa, access to ancient Swahili Coast ruins, dhow cruises, big-game fishing, and rare opportunities to observe nesting sea turtles. The island is also an active conservation hub, partnering with international marine research programmes to protect coral reefs and monitor whale shark populations.

Essential FAQ

Thanda Island operates exclusively as a private island hire. The entire island — including the main villa, all five suites, beach, reef, watercraft, and full staff — is reserved solely for one group of guests at a time. This ensures complete privacy and a fully personalised experience. The island accommodates up to 10 guests.
Whale shark encounters are most reliable between November and February, when these gentle giants congregate in the warm waters off the Tanzanian coast. Snorkelling with whale sharks is conducted under responsible wildlife guidelines — no touching, maintaining a respectful distance, and small group sizes — ensuring a safe and sustainable experience for both guests and animals.
No. The island's house reef and surrounding waters offer spectacular snorkelling accessible to all swimmers. For non-certified guests wishing to dive, the resident dive instructor offers PADI Discover Scuba Diving introductory dives in the shallow lagoon. Certified divers can access a full range of dive sites with the island's dive team.
The standard route is a scheduled or charter flight from Dar es Salaam (Julius Nyerere International Airport) to Kilwa Masoko Airstrip, approximately one hour. From Kilwa, a private speedboat transfers guests to the island in approximately 20 minutes. Helicopter charters from Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar are also available and can be arranged through the island's reservations team.
Yes — this is one of the most popular itineraries in Tanzania. A classic combination includes a 4–6 night northern circuit safari (Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire), followed by 3–5 nights at Thanda Island for an Indian Ocean finale. Zanzibar can also be added as a stepping stone, given its proximity and frequent charter connections to Kilwa.
