The Destination

The Spirit of the Wild

Shamwari Private Game Reserve is one of Africa's most awarded wildlife destinations, sprawling across 25,000 hectares of the malaria-free Eastern Cape. Since its establishment in 1992, Shamwari has transformed degraded farmland into a thriving Big Five ecosystem through an intensive conservation and reintroduction programme that has become a benchmark for responsible wildlife management in southern Africa. The reserve is home to lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, buffalo, cheetah, and wild dog, all roaming freely across diverse landscapes of rolling hills, rocky outcrops, and river valleys. Guests stay in one of six individually designed luxury lodges, ranging from the grand colonial manor of Eagles Crag to the romantic riverside retreat of Lobengula. Each lodge hosts a small number of guests, ensuring exclusive game drives led by expert field guides in open 4x4 vehicles. Shamwari is also home to the award-winning Born Free Big Cat Sanctuary and the Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre, offering guests rare insight into conservation work and animal rescue. The combination of outstanding game viewing, world-class hospitality, family-friendly options, and a deeply meaningful conservation story makes Shamwari a favourite for repeat visitors and discerning first-time safari-goers alike
