Rubondo Island National Park (Lake Victoria)
Tanzania's Crown Jewel

Rubondo Island National Park(Lake Victoria)

Rising from the southwestern waters of Lake Victoria — Africa's largest lake — Rubondo Island National Park is a lush, forested sanctuary unlike any other Tanzanian park. Chimpanzees, introduced in the 1960s, now roam freely through the dense forest alongside elephants, giraffes, and sitatunga antelopes. The surrounding lake teems with Nile perch and tigerfish, making Rubondo a sought-after sport fishing destination. Birding is exceptional, with over 300 species recorded including the rare shoebill stork. Accessible only by light aircraft or boat, Rubondo Island combines forest walks, fishing, birdwatching, and chimp trekking in one wonderfully remote package.

Chimpanzee Habituation Experience: A premier activity where visitors can trek through the forest to observe wild chimpanzees, many of whom are descendants of those rescued from European zoos.
The Shy Sitatunga: This web-footed, swamp-dwelling antelope is notoriously difficult to spot elsewhere but is frequently seen in the island's papyrus swamps.
Nile Perch Fishing: The waters around the island are famous for world-class catch-and-release fishing, with the chance to hook massive Nile perch.
Birdwatcher’s Paradise: Home to over 300 species, including the African fish eagle (which has one of its highest global concentrations here) and the rare African grey parrot.

The Spirit of the Wild

Covering approximately 457 square kilometers, Rubondo Island is a pristine wilderness where 80% of the land remains covered in thick, semi-deciduous forest. The park consists of the main Rubondo Island and 11 smaller islets, all situated in the southwestern corner of Lake Victoria. Historically a game reserve since 1965, it was gazetted as a national park in 1977 and is currently uninhabited by humans, save for park rangers and researchers.

The island is a fascinating experiment in conservation; in the 1960s, several species—including chimpanzees, elephants, and giraffes—were introduced to provide them with a safe haven. Today, these populations have thrived, creating an "ark" of biodiversity. It is one of the few places in the world where you can experience a chimpanzee habituation trek in a primary forest setting alongside the largest freshwater lake in Africa.

Essential FAQ

No. While the island has elephants and leopards (the latter are very rare), it does not have rhinos, buffalo, or lions. The appeal here is the unique mix of forest and water species like chimps and sitatunga.
It can be challenging. The forest is dense and the terrain can be muddy. Unlike some other parks, the chimps here are "semi-habituated," meaning they move fast and you may need to hike for several hours to find them.
The sandy beaches are beautiful, but you should never swim in the lake. Lake Victoria is home to large populations of Nile crocodiles and hippos that are active along the island’s shores.
While birding is good year-round, the short rains (November to December) are spectacular as migratory birds from Europe and Asia arrive, and the island’s orchids begin to bloom.
The island is a strictly protected national park with no permanent human settlements. The only people on the island are park staff, researchers, and guests staying at the lodge.
