The Destination

The Spirit of the Wild

Paje has transformed over the past two decades from a quiet fishing village into one of the most exciting beach destinations on the east coast of Zanzibar. Located on the central east coast of Unguja Island, Paje's wide, flat beach and reliable southeast trade winds have made it one of the top kite surfing spots in the world. The beach's unique character lies in its tidal extremes — at low tide, a vast expanse of tidal flats stretches out from the shore, popular with local fishermen and curious travellers. At high tide, the water surges back to the beach edge, creating ideal conditions for kite surfing, windsurfing, and stand-up paddleboarding. The village has grown into a social hub with beach bars, yoga studios, smoothie bars, and international restaurants lining the main road. Despite its popularity, Paje maintains a youthful, bohemian energy that attracts backpackers, adventure travellers, and water sport instructors from around the world.

Yes — Paje's flat, shallow lagoon and reliable winds make it one of the world's best beginner kite surfing destinations. Multiple certified schools offer lessons for all levels.
Yes, but timing matters. Swimming is best at high tide when the lagoon fills with warm turquoise water. At low tide, the water recedes significantly.
Paje has a social and youthful scene with beach bars and evening activity, but it is more low-key than Nungwi. The focus is primarily on water sports and wellness.
About 55 km — approximately 1 to 1.5 hours by road depending on traffic and vehicle type.
