The Spirit of the Wild
Nungwi sits at the very northern
tip of Zanzibar's main island, Unguja, and has established itself as the
island's premier beach destination. Unlike beaches on the east coast, Nungwi
enjoys calm, swimmable waters throughout most of the year due to its position
at the island's tip, where tidal variations are minimal. The village is a
working fishing community with a long dhow-building tradition, and visitors can
watch traditional wooden boats being hand-crafted on the beach. Nungwi's
seafront is lined with boutique hotels, beach bars, dive centres, and
restaurants catering to every taste and budget. The beach itself — a broad
crescent of powdery white sand lapped by vivid turquoise water — is widely
regarded as one of the best in East Africa. Nungwi also serves as a hub for
sunset dhow cruises, snorkelling trips to Mnemba Atoll, and scuba diving across
the island's northern reefs.
