The Spirit of the Wild

Mountain Zebra National Park was established in 1937 with the singular mission of preventing the extinction of the Cape Mountain Zebra — a subspecies reduced to fewer than 50 individuals. Today, thanks to dedicated conservation management, over 600 Cape Mountain Zebra roam the park's 284 km² of dramatic mountain terrain and Karoo plains. The park's scenic beauty is extraordinary — rugged Bankberg mountain ridges rise above sweeping plateau grasslands, creating a landscape of remarkable grandeur. Beyond its flagship species, Mountain Zebra supports a thriving community of cheetah, black wildebeest, eland, springbok, and an exceptional diversity of raptors, making it an underrated gem of the Eastern Cape Karoo.
