Mkomazi National Park
Tanzania's Crown Jewel

MkomaziNational Park

Located in northeastern Tanzania near the Kenyan border and adjacent to Tsavo West National Park, Mkomazi National Park forms part of a vast cross-border ecosystem. Known for its critically endangered black rhino sanctuary and wild dog conservation programme, Mkomazi plays a vital role in wildlife conservation. The park's semi-arid Acacia-Commiphora bushlands are home to elephants, lions, cheetahs, and giraffes, framed by the magnificent backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro on clear days. With relatively few visitors compared to northern circuit parks, Mkomazi offers solitude, dramatic landscapes, and the satisfaction of supporting some of Africa's most important conservation efforts.

Mkomazi Rhino Sanctuary: One of the most successful conservation projects in Africa, where you can see the rare black rhino at close range in a highly protected environment.
African Wild Dog Program: A dedicated breeding and reintroduction center for these charismatic and endangered "painted wolves."
Rare Dry-Country Species: Spot animals rarely seen in other parks, such as the long-necked Gerenuk, the Fringe-eared Oryx, and the Lesser Kudu.
Birdwatcher’s Paradise: Over 450 recorded species, including the striking Vulturine Guineafowl, Kori Bustards, and Secretary birds.

The Spirit of the Wild

Mkomazi National Park, established in 2008, is located between the Kilimanjaro and Tanga regions. Its name comes from the Pare word for "scoop of water," referring to the scarcity of water in this arid landscape. The park is characterized by grey-green nyika bush, open savannah woodlands, and isolated rocky hills known as inselbergs.

Unlike the lush parks of the West, Mkomazi offers a raw, "Sahel" feel. It is a bridge for migratory herds of elephants, oryx, and zebras moving through the Mkomazi-Tsavo ecosystem. Because it remained under the radar for decades, the park feels incredibly pristine, making it a favorite for seasoned safari-goers who want to avoid the "minibus crowds" of the central circuit.

Traveler Intelligence

Essential FAQ

Absolutely, especially for conservation enthusiasts. It is the best place in Tanzania to see Black Rhinos and Wild Dogs in a controlled yet natural setting.
While Mkomazi has lions, leopards, elephants, buffaloes, and rhinos, the predators are more elusive here than in the Serengeti. It is prized more for its rare "Dry-Country Special" species.
The Dry Season (June to October) is best for general wildlife viewing. However, the Wet Season (November to May) offers lush scenery and the best views of Mount Kilimanjaro.
Options include Babu’s Camp (tented camp) and several TANAPA-run campsites and cottages near the Zange Gate.
Mkomazi is semi-arid and rugged rather than vast open grassland. It has far fewer tourists, offering a much more private and adventurous safari experience.
