The Spirit of the Wild

Mount Meru (4,566 m / 14,980 ft) is Tanzania's second highest peak and Africa's fifth highest mountain, rising steeply from the floor of Arusha National Park. Despite being in the shadow of the famous Kilimanjaro, Meru is widely considered one of Africa's finest mountain treks — offering more technical challenge, richer biodiversity, and a far more intimate summit experience.

The standard route is the Momella Route, a 3–4 day circuit that ascends through five distinct vegetation zones: cultivated foothills, lush rainforest, heath and moorland, alpine desert, and the final dramatic horseshoe ridge leading to Socialist Peak.

Along the way, trekkers share the trail with giraffes, buffalos, elephants, black-and-white colobus monkeys, and a rich array of bird life — making Meru a genuine wildlife trek unlike any other in East Africa. The final summit push takes place in the pre-dawn hours, rewarding climbers with a sunrise above the clouds and, on clear days, a breathtaking panorama of Mount Kilimanjaro rising to the east.

Essential FAQ

Meru is technically more challenging due to its steep ridgeline and dramatic crater rim, but it is shorter. Most fit trekkers with no summit experience can complete it in 3–4 days. Kilimanjaro is higher (5,895 m) and takes 6–8 days, but follows more gradual slopes.
No technical climbing equipment is required. You will need good trekking boots, warm layered clothing, a sleeping bag rated to -10°C, trekking poles, and a quality rain jacket. The huts provide basic bedding.
Yes. Due to the presence of buffalo and elephant on the lower slopes, Tanzanian park regulations require all trekkers to be accompanied by an armed park ranger at all times. This is strictly enforced and adds significantly to the safety and wildlife experience.
The summit success rate is high — approximately 85–90% for trekkers who are adequately acclimatised and physically prepared. The altitude (4,566 m) is significant, so pacing carefully and hydrating well are essential.
Absolutely. Many climbers use Meru as acclimatisation for Kilimanjaro. The recommended sequence is Meru first (3–4 days), rest 2–3 days in Arusha, then begin the Kilimanjaro climb. This significantly improves summit success rates on Kili.
