Essential FAQ

• Mahale's M-Group is limited to just 4 visitors per day (versus 6 at Gombe), making it the most exclusive chimp trekking experience in the world. The forest terrain is more dramatic — steeper, denser, and set against mountain ridges descending to the lake — and the trek is generally more physically demanding. The overall experience is considered more remote, more luxurious (Greystoke Mahale is one of Africa's finest camps), and more intimate. Both are extraordinary — Mahale is the choice for those who want the most exclusive experience.
• Greystoke Mahale is a legendary luxury tented camp on the shores of Lake Tanganyika, operated by Nomad Tanzania. With just 6 forest chalets, a dhow for lake cruises, a tree house for sundowners, and a deep philosophy of immersive, barefoot wilderness travel, it is consistently ranked among the best safari camps in the world. No shoes are worn in the main camp area — guests walk barefoot on wooden decks directly above the lake shore.
• Trek durations at Mahale vary considerably — from as little as 45 minutes if M-Group has descended to lower slopes, to 5 hours if they have ranged high into the mountains. The average is 2–3 hours of walking. Once the chimps are found, you spend a maximum of 1 hour with the group. Total morning activity (including briefing, trekking, time with chimps, and return) typically takes 4–6 hours.
• Lake Tanganyika offers exceptional water activities at Mahale: swimming in crystal-clear water (the lake has extraordinary visibility), snorkelling over shallow rocky reefs teeming with endemic cichlid fish, kayaking along the forest shore, sunset dhow cruises, and sport fishing. The lake is one of the world's freshwater snorkelling gems — endemic cichlids in vivid colours rival anything found in a tropical marine reef environment.
No — Mahale is a seasonal destination. Most camps operate from May through January, with the prime months being June–October (dry season). The long rains (February–April) make the forest trails extremely challenging and most camps close. Greystoke Mahale typically operates May–January. Always confirm seasonal availability with your operator before booking.
• Mahale is more demanding than Gombe. The terrain involves steep, wet, root-covered jungle trails with significant elevation gain and loss. A good standard of fitness is required — regular walking and some hill training in the weeks before departure is strongly recommended. Walking poles are very helpful. Age and fitness restrictions vary by camp — typically a minimum age of 7–10 years applies, and older travellers or those with mobility issues should consult their doctor before booking.
