The Destination

The Spirit of the Wild

Kwandwe Private Game Reserve is one of South Africa's finest malaria-free wildlife destinations, spanning over 22,000 hectares of dramatic Eastern Cape landscape along the Great Fish River. The reserve is home to South Africa's Big Five — lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and buffalo — as well as cheetah, wild dog, and over 300 bird species. Kwandwe is renowned for its exceptionally skilled field guides, intimately small lodge sizes, and the freedom to experience the African bush without health concerns associated with malaria zones. The diverse biomes — from dense riverine thickets and open grasslands to rocky hillsides and riverine forests — create a varied and beautiful setting for game viewing. Four exclusive lodges each have a distinct character, from the romantic colonial elegance of Ecca Lodge to the family-friendly spaces of Uplands Homestead and the contemporary luxury of Great Fish River Lodge. Kwandwe's commitment to conservation has seen it successfully reintroduce and sustain populations of endangered species, making a safari here both a luxury experience and a contribution to wildlife conservation in the Eastern Cape.

Essential FAQ

Yes. The Eastern Cape falls outside South Africa's malaria transmission zones. Kwandwe is completely malaria-free, making it an excellent choice for families travelling with young children, pregnant women, and guests who prefer to avoid prophylaxis medication.
Uplands Homestead is Kwandwe's dedicated family lodge and can be booked exclusively. It features a private pool, children's activities, and a welcoming environment for all ages. Our team can advise on the best match depending on your group's ages and interests.
Kwandwe has four lodges: Great Fish River Lodge (flagship riverside luxury, up to 10 guests), Ecca Lodge (intimate and romantic, 6 guests), Uplands Homestead (family-exclusive, 8 guests), and Melton Manor (exclusive-use, 8 guests). Each offers the same quality guiding and Big Five access.
Kwandwe is excellent year-round. May to August offers cool, dry conditions with sparse vegetation and concentrated game at water sources — ideal for big cat sightings. October to November brings wildflowers, newborn animals, and spectacular birdlife during the spring season.
Absolutely — this is one of our most popular itineraries. Fly into Johannesburg or Cape Town, visit Kwandwe for a 3–4 night safari, then transfer to Cape Town for the Cape Peninsula, winelands, and coastal experiences. We handle all logistics and transfers seamlessly.
