The Spirit of the Wild

Julius Nyerere International Airport — renamed in 2006 to honour Tanzania's first president, Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere — is the aviation heart of Tanzania. Located approximately 12 kilometres from the Dar es Salaam city centre in the Pugu Hills area, the airport occupies a strategic position on the East African coast and serves as the country's principal hub for both international and domestic air traffic.

The airport comprises three terminals. Terminal 1 handles domestic flights, connecting Dar es Salaam to destinations including Kilimanjaro, Zanzibar, Arusha, Mwanza, and Mbeya. Terminal 2 is the main international terminal, serving intercontinental routes operated by carriers including Ethiopian Airlines, Kenya Airways, Qatar Airways, Turkish Airlines, RwandAir, Precision Air, and Flydubai, among others. Terminal 3, the newest addition, was developed to increase capacity and improve passenger processing for international traffic.

A major expansion and modernisation programme has transformed the airport's facilities over the past decade. The current international terminal features an extended retail concourse with duty-free shopping, dedicated VIP and business lounges, international food and beverage outlets, currency exchange counters, and improved immigration and baggage claim facilities. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the terminals.

Ground transport from the airport into the city is well-served by metered taxis from the official taxi rank, private transfers bookable through hotels and tour operators, and ride-hailing services. The drive to the city centre typically takes 30–60 minutes depending on traffic — Dar es Salaam's congestion can be significant during peak hours (07:00–09:00 and 16:00–19:00).

As the critical link between Tanzania's safari northern circuit (Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Kilimanjaro) and international long-haul routes, Julius Nyerere Airport sees a high proportion of transit passengers. Many visitors fly into DAR and immediately connect to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) or to Zanzibar (ZNZ) via domestic carrier.

Essential FAQ

The airport is approximately 12 kilometres southwest of the Dar es Salaam city centre, in the Pugu Hills area. Under normal traffic conditions the drive takes around 25–35 minutes. However, Dar es Salaam is known for significant traffic congestion, particularly during morning rush hour (07:00–09:00) and afternoon peak (16:00–19:00). Allow at least 60–90 minutes for the journey during peak periods to avoid missing your flight.
Yes. Tanzania offers a Visa on Arrival at Julius Nyerere International Airport for eligible nationalities, payable in USD cash (currently USD 50 for most nationalities, USD 100 for US passport holders). However, the Tanzania Immigration Services strongly recommends applying for an e-Visa in advance at evisa.go.tz to avoid queues at immigration. The East African Tourist Visa, which covers Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda, is also obtainable on arrival or online.
Several options are available from the airport. Official metered taxis operate from the designated taxi rank directly outside the arrivals hall — the fare to the city centre is approximately TZS 35,000–50,000 (USD 13–20). Ride-hailing apps such as Bolt function in Dar es Salaam and can be booked from the airport car park. Most hotels offer pre-arranged private transfers, which is the most comfortable option for first-time visitors. Public dala-dala (minibus) is the cheapest option but not recommended for airport journeys with luggage.
Julius Nyerere International Airport receives direct international flights from major hubs including Doha (Qatar Airways), Dubai (Flydubai, Emirates codeshares), Istanbul (Turkish Airlines), Addis Ababa (Ethiopian Airlines), Nairobi (Kenya Airways), Kigali (RwandAir), Amsterdam (KLM), and London (British Airways, seasonal). Regionally, Precision Air, Air Tanzania, Fastjet, and several charter operators connect the airport to Zanzibar, Kilimanjaro, Mwanza, and other Tanzanian cities.
The flight time between Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR) and Zanzibar's Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ) is approximately 20–25 minutes. Multiple airlines including Precision Air, Air Tanzania, Auric Air, and Coastal Aviation operate this route multiple times daily. If you have a tight international connection, most airlines recommend at least 3 hours of layover time in Dar es Salaam before your domestic onward flight.
Yes, there are lounge facilities at Julius Nyerere International Airport. The main international terminal (Terminal 2) features airline-operated business class lounges for passengers travelling in premium cabins on qualifying airlines. In addition, the Tanzania Airports Authority operates a dedicated VIP/CIP facility. Several third-party lounge-access programmes (Priority Pass, Lounge Key) may be accepted — passengers should verify access before travel. Lounges typically offer Wi-Fi, refreshments, seating, and shower facilities
Travellers arriving at Julius Nyerere International Airport must declare: cash or monetary instruments exceeding USD 10,000 (or equivalent); commercial goods, gifts, or samples above the duty-free threshold; any fresh produce, plant material, seeds, or animal products; firearms and ammunition (which require prior permits); and any prescription medications, particularly controlled substances (carry a doctor's letter). Failure to declare goods can result in confiscation and fines. Tanzania's customs authority operates random inspection of both red and green channel passengers.
