The Destination

The Spirit of the Wild

Johannesburg is the economic heartbeat of Africa and the most visited city on the continent, serving as the primary international gateway for safari travellers heading to Kruger, the private reserves, and beyond. Far more than a transit hub, Jozi — as it is affectionately known — is a dynamic, culturally rich city undergoing a remarkable urban renaissance. The Apartheid Museum and Constitution Hill offer powerful, sobering insights into South Africa's turbulent past and inspiring democratic transition. The townships of Soweto, where Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu once lived side by side, tell the story of resilience and spirit that define modern South Africa. Maboneng and Braamfontein have emerged as creative epicentres of art, food, street culture, and nightlife, while the leafy northern suburbs of Sandton, Rosebank, and Parkhurst deliver world-class restaurants, galleries, and boutique shopping. For families, the Apartheid Museum, Gold Reef City, the Johannesburg Zoo, and Constitution Hill all provide engaging experiences. With direct international flights connecting Johannesburg to Europe, Asia, the Americas, and across Africa, OR Tambo International Airport is the continent's busiest and most connected hub — making Johannesburg the natural start and end point for any southern or eastern African journey.

Essential FAQ

Citizens of the EU, UK, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and most African nations do not require a visa to enter South Africa for tourism stays of up to 30–90 days. We recommend verifying the current requirements with the South African embassy or consulate in your home country before travel.
Johannesburg is a major metropolitan city with the usual urban precautions that apply worldwide. Most tourists experience no issues when staying in recommended areas (Sandton, Rosebank, Parkhurst, Melville), using reputable transport, and following standard city safety practices. Our team provides up-to-date guidance on safe neighbourhoods and activities.
Most travellers spend 1–2 nights in Johannesburg as a pre- or post-safari stop. Two nights allows time for the Apartheid Museum and a Soweto tour, which are both deeply worthwhile experiences. If you wish to include Pilanesberg or a Magaliesberg day trip, allow 3 nights.
Sandton is the preferred base for most international visitors — it offers excellent hotels, restaurants, the Nelson Mandela Square, and the Gautrain station for easy airport transfers. Rosebank and Melville are popular alternatives with a more relaxed, café-culture atmosphere.
Yes. Pilanesberg National Park (approximately 2 hours from Johannesburg) is a malaria-free Big Five reserve and an excellent day-trip or overnight option. Madikwe Game Reserve (4 hours) is world-class for wild dog sightings. We can arrange full-day or overnight trips from Johannesburg to either reserve.
