Gombe National Park
Tanzania's Crown Jewel

GombeNational Park

Tanzania's smallest national park, Gombe is world-renowned as the site where Dr. Jane Goodall began her groundbreaking chimpanzee research in 1960. Nestled along the eastern shores of Lake Tanganyika, this remote forest sanctuary offers intimate encounters with habituated chimpanzees in their natural habitat. Dense rainforest trails lead through dramatic valleys and crystal-clear streams. Beyond chimps, Gombe is home to olive baboons, red colobus monkeys, and over 200 bird species. The park's pristine lake shores provide a stunning backdrop for one of Africa's most unique and personal wildlife experiences.

The Spirit of the Wild

Gombe National Park is world-renowned as the site where Dr. Jane Goodall began her groundbreaking chimpanzee research in 1960. Situated on the eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika, this tiny park of 52 km² packs dense tropical rainforest, steep valleys, rushing streams, and crystal-clear lake beaches into a breathtakingly intimate wilderness. Essential FAQ

• Moderate fitness is required. Chimp treks involve hiking steep forest trails for anywhere from 30 minutes to 4 hours depending on where the chimps have ranged that day. The terrain is uneven, roots and rocks are frequent, and slopes can be steep. Sturdy ankle-support hiking boots are essential. Guests with significant mobility limitations should discuss their situation with their operator before booking.
• The mandatory minimum distance is 8 metres, but in practice the habituated chimps frequently approach closer — sometimes within 2–3 metres. Unlike gorilla trekking in Rwanda or Uganda where distances are more strictly enforced, Gombe's chimps may walk directly past or even sit near the group. This intimacy is one of Gombe's most treasured qualities and the reason why many visitors describe it as the most moving wildlife encounter of their lives.
• Jane Goodall's research at Gombe, begun in 1960, fundamentally changed our understanding of primates and human evolution. Her most significant discoveries include: chimpanzees making and using tools (previously believed to be uniquely human behaviour); complex social hierarchies and political alliances within chimp communities; inter-community warfare; and a full range of emotions including grief, joy, and empathy. Gombe remains one of the longest-running field research sites in the history of wildlife science.
• Both are world-class but have different characters. Gombe is smaller, historically more significant (Jane Goodall's legacy), easier to reach from Kigoma, and slightly less expensive. Mahale offers a more dramatic landscape (mountains meeting the lake), greater exclusivity, and is generally considered the more luxurious experience. Gombe allows up to 6 visitors per group; Mahale limits to 4. For the most exclusive experience, choose Mahale; for historical significance, choose Gombe. Ideally, visit both.
• Permits are limited to 6 visitors per habituated group per day and must be booked through TANAPA or via a licensed tour operator well in advance. During peak season (July–September) permits can be booked out months ahead. The permit fee (approx. USD 100) is typically included in operator packages. On the day, a TANAPA ranger leads the trek and enforces all regulations.
Yes — Lake Tanganyika's waters at Gombe are crystal clear and generally considered safe for swimming in the beach areas adjacent to the lodge. The lake is the world's second deepest (1,436 m) and holds over 500 species of endemic cichlid fish. Snorkelling is a wonderful complement to the chimp trekking experience. Always swim in designated areas and check with lodge staff about hippo and crocodile activity before entering the water.
