Expedition Intelligence (FAQ)
What exactly is a night game drive?
It is a specialized safari conducted after sunset in an open 4x4 vehicle. Using powerful, filtered spotlights, your guide and a dedicated "spotter" illuminate the bush to find animals that are invisible during the day. This is the only time you can witness the high-stakes hunting rituals of predators or the activity of elusive, smaller nocturnal species.
How long does the activity last?
Night drives typically last between 2 and 3 hours. They usually begin after an early dinner, around 7:30 PM or 8:00 PM, and conclude by 11:00 PM. This timeframe aligns with the peak activity period for nocturnal hunters like leopards and hyenas before they retreat further into the bush.
What animals can I expect to see?
While you may see lions and leopards on the prowl, the real stars are the nocturnal specialists:
Small Mammals: Genets, civets, porcupines, honey badgers, and white-tailed mongoose.
Primates: The eerie, reflective eyes of Bush Babies (Galagos) leaping through the trees.
Predators: Hyenas, jackals, and occasionally African wild cats or servals.
Birds: Spotted eagle owls, nightjars, and other hunters of the dark.
Is it safe to be in the park at night?
Yes. Safety is strictly managed by TANAPA regulations. All night drives are led by expert guides and are often accompanied by an armed park ranger. Vehicles are equipped with communication radios and first-aid kits. Because you remain inside the vehicle at all times, you are safely separated from the wildlife.
