About Wildebeest Migration

Africa’s great wildebeest migration, often referred to as one of the natural world’s wonders, is a wonderful sight to see. Every year, 1.5 to 2 million wildebeest, as well as gazelles and zebra, rush through the veldt of southern Africa in the style of the Lion King. When the Serengeti in Tanzania experiences a dry, cold August, the wildebeest begin their incredible trip north, following the rains to the Masai Mara in Kenya. These vast herds may move about 1,000 miles in a single year, making it one of the greatest animal migrations on the planet.

The recent rains left the gorgeous caldera reserve with a plenty of grass for zebra and wildebeest to feast on from December to March, and it is during this time of year that the wildebeest calving season begins. Predators like as lions, cheetahs, leopards, and even hyenas exploit this period to prey on weak and disoriented calves.

When the rains stop in April/May, the zebras continue their journey north to the Maasai Mara. The wildebeest follow the zebra everywhere they go.

The massive herd spans the Grumeti River in June/July and the Mara River between August and November, providing some of the most stunning photos and video footage. The flooded rivers sweep away members of the herd, predators hunt the stragglers, and the opportunistic Nile crocodiles feast as animals attempt to cross the water. It’s a gruesome, spectacular demonstration of the food chain in action.

Once the crossings are completed, the herd settles in Kenya’s Maasai Mara. After spending the dry season in the more fertile Mara, the migration returns south in preparation for another calving season in the New Year.
